Vice Mayor Jim Shulman — Nashville’s Mayoral Race

Speakers Friday, June 9, 2023

Jim Shulman --Nashville Vice Mayor

Vice Mayor Shulman will provide his perspective on Nashville’s Mayoral Election as one who needs to work with whoever is elected. The Vice Mayor, although not connected to the Mayor’s Office, needs to be able to work with the Mayor. The Mayor’s Office drives many of the major pieces of legislation which come before the Council; the Vice Mayor can relay important information about the City directly to the Mayor; and the Vice Mayor takes over in case something were to happen to the Mayor. The Vice Mayor, therefore, needs to be able to work with whomever is elected. Shulman will talk about the candidates on Friday, talk about what he is hearing around the City, and then explain the election process.

Jim Shulman is the Vice Mayor of Nashville and President of the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County ¹. He was sworn in on September 17, 2018 ¹. He is also the CEO of Safe Haven Family Shelter, a Nashville-based organization that helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness ¹⁴.

Shulman graduated from Vanderbilt Law School. After working as lead legal counsel for the state Department of Finance and Administration and serving as chief of staff for then-Speaker of the House Jimmy Naifeh, he was elected to the Metro Council (25th District) in 1999 ².
