Creating a safer Nashville involves much more than how the police respond to calls. Crime prevention also depends on strong neighborhoods, engaged businesses, effective policing, and trust between law enforcement and the people they serve. It requires residents, businesses, community organizations, and police to recognize the roles they can play in improving public safety. How can these groups work together to make Nashville safer before a crime ever occurs?
The Green Hills Rotary Club welcomes Halim Genus, Chief Executive Officer of the Nashville Police + Public Safety Alliance, for a discussion about public safety in Nashville. Genus will provide a data-informed look at where Nashville stands today, what residents are experiencing, and the challenges and opportunities facing the community.
The Nashville Police + Public Safety Alliance works at the intersection of public safety, policing, and community engagement. While responding to crime is the responsibility of the Metro Nashville Police Department, the Alliance focuses on strengthening the broader community role in crime prevention and public safety. Its work includes supporting effective policing, encouraging collaboration, increasing data transparency, and building connections among law enforcement, residents, businesses, nonprofits, and other community partners.
As Chief Executive Officer, Genus leads the Alliance’s citywide strategy and develops partnerships with Metro departments, nonprofit organizations, and private-sector leaders. The organization’s initiatives are intended both to improve outcomes for Nashville residents and to support the well-being and effectiveness of law enforcement personnel.
Before joining the Alliance, Genus served as Vice President of Statewide Partnerships at Teach For America, where he led the North Carolina program team. He previously served as Chief Schools Officer for KIPP Albany Community Public Schools, overseeing school performance and coaching school leaders.
Genus holds bachelor’s degrees in Africana Studies and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and completed the National Principal Supervisors Academy at Relay Graduate School of Education. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Leadership and Public Service at Lipscomb University.
Join the Green Hills Rotary Club at 7:15 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Boy Scout Service Center on Hillsboro Road. Genus will offer members an opportunity to better understand public safety in Nashville and consider the roles that residents, businesses, civic organizations, and law enforcement can play in creating a safer community.
