David A. Smith — The Rise of Legal Sports Wagering in Tennessee

Speaker Friday, April 5, 2024

The Green Hills Rotary Club welcomes David A. Smith, Director of Engagement for the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council, to speak at our weekly meeting on Wednesday, April 5th at 7:15am.

Mr. Smith will provide an inside look at the state’s foray into legalized online sports betting since its launch in November 2020. Over $10 billion has already been wagered in Tennessee on sporting events in this still-new market.

He will discuss the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council’s role in regulating and overseeing mobile sports betting statewide. From daily operations to challenges faced, Mr. Smith can offer a first-hand perspective on how this agency monitors operators, ensures compliance, and oversees tax revenue distribution.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Smith served as Communications Director for the Tennessee Lottery which initially facilitated Tennessee’s sports betting rollout. He also worked as Press Secretary and Communications Director under former Governor Bill Haslam’s administration.

With his experience across state government communications and the sports gambling industry, Mr. Smith promises an insightful presentation on this increasingly popular and lucrative arena in Tennessee.

We invite you to join us at our Wednesday morning Rotary meeting to learn more about legalized sports wagering’s impact. All guests are welcome!
