Kathy Schultenover — Best Stories from Parnassus Books

Speaker Friday, September 15, 2023

“Stories constitute the single most powerful weapon in a leader’s arsenal.

Dr. Howard Gardner, professor Harvard University

“Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it.”

 —Hannah Arendt, political theorist, philosopher

“Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can’t remember who we are or why we’re here.”

Sue Monk Kidd, author

Books are stories. Reading them makes us all better storytellers and leaders. Fiction informs our lives and shows us how we can be better people using an imaginary world. Sometimes we, the reader, laugh, and sometimes we are aghast at the imaginary world set before us. Other times we learn important lessons for business or community. Regardless, if it is a good book, we learn about a community we may know little about and find ourselves changed, thinking “What a riot!” or “Wow–so that is how others react?” or asking questions like “What went wrong?” or “How do I and my friends do better?”

Kathy Schultenover is a bookseller at Parnassus Books and Book Clubs Manager. She also facilitates the Parnassus Book Club and the Classics Book Club meetings.
